The Last Sailing of the Miskatonic Mariner

from Crime by Anchoress

/

lyrics

We set out at dawn
Aboard the Miskatonic Mariner
To reveal the mysteries of
A strange phenomenon.

Local fishermen raving of a “wall on the water”
Set the town in a tizzy. Amid the uproar,
The Mayor has requested that the University,
We men of learning, send a team to ascertain
The nature of this structure, where it came from,
And what can be done about it.

The March of Science, moving ever onward:
Every Question has an Answer,
And every Answer brings more Questions and
On and on; a good scientist never sleeps.

To whit, verily I stand,
Gazing upon a great Question
Growing from the ocean like a
Twisted spine of black needles.

We set to work; in the name of Science!
First, building temporary laboratory structures
On the surface of the nearest needle towers
While the Mariner anchors below us.

We began on the next dawn
Studying the ominous obelisks.
Fascinating; frustrating, in their
Utterly alien nature.
But when we returned
At the end of the day,
Everyone was gone. Ghosts and skin
On the Miskatonic Mariner.

We sought after any sign
To explain the missing crew,
But found nothing save for drifts of dust
On everything not sheathed in slime.

A manic, inhuman howl rent the air
As we were knocked from our feet
When something struck the Mariner.
We could only flee to the safety of our labs.

I was the last to escape and
When I turned back, I saw a Question of
Teeth and tentacles that cannot be Answered.
The world began to shake.

I watched the ocean fall away beneath us.
We did it all in the name of Science.
What once a tower, now a bridge.

I looked up into the sky,
And saw it staring back at me.
